Edward Fischer, Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, author, and MEF Board member:

Marilyn was a person whose convictions were so strongly and purely held that they compelled those around her to act as well. I remember meeting her when I was a young, green graduate student, and she welcomed me into the fold of Guatemalan scholars with open arms. And she did that with many, many people, always welcoming, never excluding. All the while, she provided the energy to start the Guatemalan Scholars Network and the energy to keep it going. Likewise, her early and stalwart support of MEF. She lived her beliefs and was a shining example to us all in that sense. She will be missed.
