English Language Program
English language proficiency has become an important qualification for our university students who seek degrees in medical and technical fields, or for students hoping to pursue graduate work in an English-speaking country.
There are currently two efforts underway to help our Maya students:
ELP-Guatemala:
English Language Program (ELP) is a two-week intensive English immersion program in Antigua, Guatemala for Maya university students. Students live in homestays and work hard every day in small and large group classes with volunteer ESL instructors, learning conversation and grammar. The instructors report that the students make remarkable progress in spoken and written communication in that short time, with students giving presentations each week. Thanks to all the amazing volunteers that have made ELP-Guatemala possible since 2014.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us.
ELP-online:
When ELP 2021 had to be canceled, due to the pandemic and ensuing travel restrictions, ELP coordinator Randhi Wilson found a way to give the Maya students in Guatemala the opportunity to participate in the ESL online classes of the Beaverton Literacy Council in Oregon. We thank Randhi and all involved in this effort to keep the students engaged and learning!
If you want to support English learning for Maya students, a donation of $65 will allow a student to participate in the ELP-online for one semester; your donation of $200 will cover a student’s participation in an ELP-Guatemala course.
