Dear Friends:
With 2024 now well underway, we wish to thank those of you who have sent contributions to support MEF programs and those of you who decided to sign up for recurring giving at www.mayaedufound.org We know that times are lean for many and, therefore, it means all the more that you have decided to give to our work again or for the first time.
We are grateful for support already given or pledged by organizations like the Daniele Agostino Derossi Foundation, the Albert and Elaine Borchard Foundation, and the H. T. Ewald Foundation, the Robert Laughlin Family Fund, and others. A special thank you goes also to the Plumsock Fund, our supporting organization and its members. In Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico, we thank each partner nonprofit for their help in administering the MEF scholarship programs for Maya students. With their help, we can support 500+ students again this year in the approved programs. Former FEPMaya students will be under new supervision, guided by MEF and its assistants. More on that in future communications. We send best wishes to all our students. Adelante!
We are pleased to announce the Joan Robinson Scholarships, in honor of a great woman whom we lost on February 26, 2023. This year’s support from the Daniele Agostino Derossi Foundation, where she was Vice-President, will support 30 Maya students, in honor of Joan who was always deeply involved and invested in helping indigenous people, especially girls and women. She frequently traveled to projects, no matter how difficult the logistics. She genuinely cared about the beneficiaries, with warmth, kindness, and understanding for difficult circumstances. Though Joan is no longer with us, her work will live on in Maya students who receive a Joan Robinson Scholarship, making it possible for them to reach professional degrees they had only dreamt of before.
